ECN: network access is not the same as a pricing label
In institutional trading, an electronic communication network connects buy and sell interests according to its own rules. Retail brokerage often uses “ECN account” to describe a tighter spread with a separate commission. The existence of a commission, however, does not establish that each retail order reaches a named external venue.
Ask whether the broker explains its price sources, order handling, execution venue arrangements and whether it trades as principal. If those details are unavailable, treat “ECN” as an account label—not audited evidence of an execution chain.
STP: a broad operational description
Straight-through processing generally describes workflows in which an order or transaction passes through systems with little manual intervention. In retail forex advertising it often suggests routing toward liquidity providers. Yet automation can take place within a brokerage’s own infrastructure, and different brokers may use the expression to describe different arrangements.
The practical questions are whether the broker is your legal counterparty, how orders are priced and filled, whether orders may be rejected or partially executed, and which risk-management arrangements are disclosed. There is no reliable shortcut from the three letters “STP” to a measured execution-quality ranking.
Market maker: what a counterparty actually does
A market maker quotes prices at which it may buy from or sell to customers. In an over-the-counter CFD structure the broker or contracting entity can be the customer’s counterparty and may offset part of its exposure externally. This is not inherently proof of unfair conduct, just as external routing is not inherently proof of perfect pricing.
What matters is governance of conflicts of interest, fair execution, financial strength, transparent pricing and the rules of the account. Traders should read the terms stating whether the company deals as principal, its order-execution policy and the applicable regulatory requirements.
Practical differences worth investigating
| Popular label | Common intended meaning | What it cannot prove alone |
|---|---|---|
| ECN | Electronic participant matching or network-style pricing | Which venue actually filled the retail order |
| STP | Automated processing or routing | Absence of conflicts, rejections or slippage |
| Market maker | Firm quoting prices and potentially acting as counterparty | Poor execution or unfair pricing by itself |
Who receives the order, and under which policy?
What is the effective spread, commission and markup?
What execution and conflict information is disclosed?
Conceptual research checklist. It is not a depiction of any named broker’s infrastructure.
Do ECN accounts always have lower total costs?
Not necessarily. A raw-style account may charge an explicit commission while another account includes the charge in a wider spread. On EUR/USD, a hypothetical 0.2-pip spread plus $7 round-turn commission for one standard lot gives about $9 of combined transaction friction using a $10 pip value. An illustrative spread-only account at 0.8 pip gives around $8. The lower headline spread loses in this example.
These inputs are invented to show arithmetic, not evidence about specific execution venues. See our forex trading cost guide and scenario calculator to make assumptions explicit before comparing brokers.
Execution mode and broker model are not the same
MetaTrader 5 distinguishes Instant Execution, Request Execution, Market Execution and Exchange Execution as platform modes, with each symbol’s mode defined by the brokerage company. That setting describes how the platform handles a trade request; it does not by itself identify whether the company is an ECN, STP provider or market maker. See MetaTrader 5’s official trading principles.
Confusing these different concepts leads to sweeping claims such as “Market Execution means ECN,” which are not justified by the platform definition. Check both the technical order handling and the legal relationship with the counterparty.
How ForexReview assesses a broker’s claims
Start with the Compare Brokers tool to shortlist platforms and trading conditions. Then inspect the provider’s official order-execution policy, conflicts disclosure, legal entity and instruments. Look for transparent rejection, requote and slippage information where available, and record where information is missing rather than assigning unearned confidence.
For international brokers, remember that account execution models, pricing and regulatory arrangements may differ by entity or platform. Broker selection still requires the broader checks described in our 10-point checklist.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is ECN the same thing as a raw-spread account?
No. Raw describes how costs may be quoted; ECN describes a possible execution network concept. One label does not establish the other.
Is a market maker always trading against a customer?
A broker may act as the contractual counterparty and manage market risk in different ways. This structure is not proof of misconduct; review conflicts, pricing and execution disclosures.
Does STP guarantee no requotes?
No. STP is not a universal execution guarantee. Platform execution rules and order conditions must be examined separately.
