What is overnight financing in forex?
Leveraged rolling forex positions generally do not involve taking final currency delivery on the date of entry. Instead, the position is carried forward under the broker’s terms. A financing rate may reflect currency interest-rate differentials, tom-next market pricing, a broker markup or administration fee, and any product-specific adjustments.
The result is not always a payment by the trader. A position may receive a credit under certain rate and direction combinations, though a credit is not guaranteed and both sides may sometimes incur charges. Current rates can change and are distinct from the bid–ask spread and order commission.
How are long and short swap rates different?
Broker platforms commonly publish a buy/long swap and a sell/short swap for each symbol. These numbers may be expressed as points, account-currency amounts, an annualised percentage or another platform-specific unit. Reading the unit is as important as reading the sign.
For example, suppose an entirely hypothetical position incurs a debit of $1.20 per normal overnight rollover, at the selected lot size and current funding schedule. If you cross two ordinary rollover points, the illustrative debit would be $2.40. That is a simple arithmetic example, not the rate of any broker or currency pair.
| Position scenario | Illustrative daily financing | Rollover multiplier | Estimated debit |
|---|---|---|---|
| One ordinary rollover | $1.20 | 1 day | $1.20 |
| Two ordinary rollovers | $1.20 | 2 days | $2.40 |
| One triple rollover | $1.20 | 3 days | $3.60 |
Why does triple swap commonly occur on Wednesday?
Many spot-style currency trades follow a T+2 settlement convention. With weekend days excluded from settlement, rolling a position through the midweek boundary can require financing several calendar days at once. Under many providers’ standard forex schedules, that produces a three-day adjustment on Wednesday rather than separate Saturday and Sunday debits.
Do not convert “commonly Wednesday” into a universal rule. Settlement holidays can change multipliers, other asset classes often have different conventions, and brokers can publish instrument-specific adjustments. The correct source is your provider’s current rollover calendar for the symbol in question.
Typical convention for some currency pairs. Holidays and broker-specific settlement calendars can change the multiplier or day.
IG’s published FX rollover calendar explains the usual settlement logic and shows the actual daily multipliers, including holiday exceptions. OANDA’s financing documentation separately illustrates why long and short funding rates can differ and may change over time.
Why a “swap-free” account still needs scrutiny
Some providers offer accounts described as swap-free or Islamic, but the commercial terms and eligibility criteria can vary significantly. A broker may impose administration charges after a holding threshold, restrict symbols, or apply a different account fee structure. “Swap-free” is therefore not sufficient evidence that overnight trading has no carrying cost in every case.
If a strategy regularly holds a position beyond daily rollover, check the relevant account schedule and any grace period. Conditions should be verified with the regulated legal entity that would serve you, not an undated broker comparison table.
Comparing total costs when holding positions
Suppose Trader A opens and closes ten one-lot positions in a month, paying an illustrative $9 transaction cost for each, with no rollover. The estimated total is $90. Trader B pays the same $9 transaction cost on ten trades but also incurs $2 in financing on each of five overnight positions. Under those invented assumptions, the second trader’s total is $100.
That difference illustrates why the “cheapest” account changes with holding style. It says nothing about expected profitability, execution quality or leverage suitability. For a framework that treats spread, commission and financing together, start with Forex Trading Costs Explained.
Use the holding-period controls in our calculator
Open the True Trading Cost Calculator and enter an instrument, lot size, trade frequency and number of holding nights. Check the selected account family and long/short direction. The tool is useful for consistent scenarios, but any figure marked as indicative or pending should be treated as an estimate until current broker data are verified.
You can also use Compare Broker Costs to explore paired broker studies. Always distinguish verified live terms from published minimum values, and recheck costs before opening a leveraged position.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is forex swap always charged on Wednesday?
No. Many rolling forex instruments apply a three-day adjustment midweek, but the precise day and multiplier depend on settlement rules, holidays, product type and broker schedule.
Can a forex swap rate be positive?
Yes, some positions can receive a financing credit. The actual result depends on the rate, side, instrument and broker fees and can change over time.
Do day traders pay overnight swap?
Typically not if a position opens and closes before the provider’s rollover cutoff, although spread, commission and execution costs can still apply.
Educational and risk notice: Examples are hypothetical and are not live broker quotes. Forex and CFDs are complex leveraged products. Overnight charges can change, and losses can be substantial.
